Dingy Killer,

Some day, after several beers, I hope to find out the name of that award.

Funny you should bring up rowing...

One of my stories about my TOUCH WOOD days was the time I was becalmed for
many hours off Toronto. I had told my parents that I would be home for
supper; but as I always do, I also gave them a 'call the Coast Guard' time
six hours later.

I was bringing the boat home from Whitby; but just a few miles short of
home, in a dead clock calm ran out of fuel. By midnight my running lights
had killed the battery stone dead and of course this all occurred in the
days before cell phones.

I tried sculling her a-la WoodenBoat Magazine but after hours of work my
reference bearing remained unchanged. The water was a still as glass and
the night was utterly black.

Sure enough about 2am I could see a speed boat running to and from inshore
of me; I guessed correctly that I was reported overdue. I had lost my
flashlight while climbing back aboard earlier after trying to tow from the
dinghy, so my only signaling device was my flare pistol. Not wanting to
cause a general panic (I was in no danger, but only wanted to be reported to
my parents as safe) I waited until the police boat was at it's closest pass
to me - still a couple of miles away - then aimed horizonataly with the
pistol and pulled the trigger.

All I heard was a click. 'Damn, a dud', I thought. I aimed down at the
water, cocked it and pulled again. This time there was a bang and a
terrific flash - in the light of which I saw that the dinghy was alongside.

Yup, I shot it.

Just so you all will benefit from my experience, an Olin 12 gauge flare
pistol is quite a weapon. I blew a hole about 1" in diameter right through
the dink's 1/4" marine plywood transom. I could see the shell boiling and
burning as it sank.

The cops didn't see me, and I didn't try to signal them again. They found
me about an hour later and towed me home.

I made the huge mistake of telling a friend what had happened and
subsequently was called up to receive an award at our sailing club's annual
dinner that winter...
