Good thinking Rod, 

Imagine if you got rid of the rig, there would be nothing stopping the
fitting of six or eight bicycle style saddle and peddle outfits all chained
into a gear box which might deliver power to the shaft.

With the backstay gone, one could fit a sport fishing style 'fighting chair'
but in this case facing forward... Imagine tooling to windward with a
women's olympic cycling team peddling away while the skipper reclines in the
chair, observing, quaffing a cool beverage and accepting the salutes of all
who pass...
