[Public-List] Cutlas bearing help please

OK - I am going to stop pontificating... I need to ask for help.

Today I tried to remove the casting that contains the cutlas bearing from
SURPRISE. The bolts came out OK but the casting was stubborn. My son and I
pried it out along the shaft about 1/2" but we found we were prying against
some very strong but elastic resistance. We could see that there was a mass
of old caulking compound along the exterior of the casting were it went in
the sternpost from the exterior flange. I decided to stop pulling and
twisting in case I was about to break something. Funny thing was after we
stopped prying at it for a moment we saw the casting slowly and evilly pull
itself back up tight to the sternpost...

Has anyone done this job on a apres-400 series Alberg?

We did remove the key from the keyway in the shaft; and the bearing itself
is so worn that it is not holding the shaft much. I think our problem may
be the old caulking but I want to make sure before I go back at it with the
puller I am making.

Standing by for whatever advice may come.
(Mark I know you may have the answer but you may not see my earlier enquiry
til later...)
