[Public-List] Cutlas bearing help please

Hi Gord,

When we did ours on our 30, I covered the teeth on the wrench with duct tape
so it would no gouge the bronze pipe. Then, with one person inside holding
the stern tub I put the wrench on the outer stern bearing casing and
unscrewed it (after removing the 2 bolts out side). If the stern tub rotates
you will have to rebed the whole tube. The hole is quite large and packed
with grey dolfinite. That would mean cleaning out all the old dolfinite if
the bond broke. So I wouldn't chance it - use the two wrench system.

Then I took the fitting down to a machine shop and they removed the bearing.
The cost was half that of the bearing itself and well worth it. They then
pressed in the new bearing with the proper equipment. Worth the extra
nickel.

ATB
John

Gord,

Yes the pipe wrench should be inside the boat on the inboard side of the
tube. It is a bitch to get to you may need to slide the rubber hose off to
get enough exposer on the tube to get grip. You might just try to unscrew
the housing first and use your judgement about how much pressure is needed.
It may unscrew fairly easy and you would not need the inside wrench. On the
other hand if you really have to lean on it, the inside wrench is probably
needed. Hope this helps.
