Most of my sailboat racing has been done in dinghies using the percentage D-PN Portsmouth ratings established by U.S. Sailing. Each class boat actually has five handicap numbers based on wind velocity.  I agree that the TOD handicaps get very skewed especially when an entire race is low wind or excessively high wind. On a small inland lake with a short racecourse the RC can take wind readings before and after each race to make an average and then adjust the Portsmouth ratings for each boat in the mixed fleet for that particular race. 

As we all know the best racing comparison is in a single class fleet of boats.  We all cherish one-design racing when we can participate. Even then some classes are developmental classes' and some are strict one-design. Further, strict one-design varies all over the map.  I have observed that there are more heated rants within a single one-design class as to what constitutes one-design for them than perhaps between TOD and TOT proponents. 

My original shock was that Gord stated that AFTER the race was concluded the RC was lobbied and caved into CHANGING the scoring system handicap for the regatta! Man-o-man, speak of stuffing the ballot box.  That, in my mind is way beyond acceptable and the ultimate in unsportsmanlike behaviour. 

When I hear of trave sties in the sport of sail racing like this it makes my blood boil. 

I have been the RC for some local racing where the SI's were pretty loose, but would never consider changing them so my buddies won the event. 

I suppose that if 5 Alberg 30's had showed up for the regatta then they would have been some greater influence over suggesting that the RC keep the SI's from becoming a moving target. 

Oh well I guess that the RC didn't get it.
