Michael,

A big thankyou for your thoughts.  I  have not been able to have another look at the rudder. .  Its been  consistent -10 over the past few evenings.  I draw the line at -5!

I think the wire idea is sound however the rudder is well and truly stuck.  I'm looking for some penetrating oil to try and free it but I'm finding they may not be compatible with bronze or brass as they may cause surface pitting.

Things are supposed to warm up a little at the weekend and I will have one last go to free it without separating from the rudder blade.  Rachels photos were very helpful in determining rudder design and I now understand how the rudder is attached.

I will let you know how I go - it maybe useful to someone in the future.
