I've seen bronze bushings in Ace Hardware, and thought about that.

Oh, that sounds like a great idea.

When I dealt with this issue on /Good Week/ I just went up to a 5/16" 
pin.  The shoe was worn egg-shaped and the threads in the rudder post 
were about gone from corrosion.  I've got the set of 3 taps, if anyone 
needs to borrow them.
