[Public-List] loose casting on propeller shaft at end of keel

The top & bottom silicon bronze lag bolts are threaded into the glass 
deadwood in the aperture to hold the cutlass housing top and bottom.

The cutlass housing its self is threaded onto the stern tube.

To remove the cutlass housing is a two person job.

One person inside with a monkey wrench, with its jaws padded to not gouge or 
crush the bronze stern tube.

The other person outside turning anticlockwise the unbolted Cutlass housing 
very slowly with another monkey wrench with padded jaws.

The person inside must be very careful to not let the stern tube rotate 
during this process, which would break the bond with the dolfinitie bedding 
compound which runs the length of the stern tube inside the hull.

If the cutlass bolts have nothing to grab to inspect the glass. Has water 
gotten in and eroded the resin in the glass leaving only raw grey fibers of 
glass with no resin in them ?

If so, this will need to be thoroughly dried and epoxy resin reinserted 
along with new glass fibers to strengthen the bond. Then drill and tap the 
repair to accept new lag bolts - make sure the new lag bolts are silicon or 
manganese bronze from a reputable fastener supplier.

Up here in the Toronto area I use Pacific Fasteners products, they are on 
Chauncey Ave off Islington Ave and are very high quality.

Don't use hardware store bronze, its full of zinc and will fail.

I'm sure Gord Laco will have some thoughts on this.

My old A-30 was 544. I did not have to rebuild the holes as they were in 
good shape, but I did replace the cutlass bearing and stuffing box hose and 
replaced with new lag bolts. I used Sikkaflex 241 which is now 291 or 292 
for bedding.
