Hugh,
I think it runs clockwise looking aft. Take a look at your old impeller. The wear will be only on one side of the vanes and that will be a clue for the direction of rotation. Also the firing order is cast into the cylinder head. Turn the engine over in one direction by hand and look at which direction the distributor rotor turns. Then determine from that if the firing order makes sense. You can also see which way the starter motor must turn to engage the bendix drive, from that you can determine which way the engine is turned to start.

Subject: [Public-List] GrayMarine engine question
Good day,
I am reassembling the Sherwood water pump off our Sea Scout engine after replacing the seals and bearings. In order to correctly install the impeller I need to know which way the engine turns.
Could one of the GrayMarine owners please tell me whether the engine flywheel turns clockwise or counter-clockwise when looking at the motor from the cabin? I would winch the engine over on the starter except that I have it (the starter motor) removed for cleaning and drying after the pump seal failed and caused a spray of water all over the engine compartment.
Thanks in advance.
Hugh
