[Public-List] So Cal A-30 casting call

Gord,
I have the dubious distinction of being a recognized expert in the design of
high tech office space such as customer service centers and have spoken on
the subject at several industry conferences. I applied to speak at one of
the bigger call center conferences and was turned down but later noticed the
seminar I proposed was described in the conference program exactly as I had
written in my application, even the title.
I attended the seminar. It was presented by a young woman from a call
center employment consulting firm who did a bad job of regurgitation
information contained on our web site. At least she didn't claim she was
me. During the question/answer session she couldn't answer any of the
questions but I did get a chance to ask her, if she was going to steel all
of my material, could she at least do a better job of presenting it. I then
answered all of the audience questions.
The conference organizers were apologetic. Being in the US, where
everyone's brother-in-law is an attorney, I should have sued someone just
out of principle. Some people's kids have no shame.

Good morning Roger -
That's almost not funny...
The swordmaster's on M&C have come across several imposters who claim credit
for choreographing the fight scenes in M&C. Dan Speaker has told me that
when he goes to auditions he brings a copy of the 'making of' book so that
he can quash claims that appear to supercede his. In my own case, there was
fellow in Canada who claimed on his website and in various presentations
that he had my job. This was while we were still making the film. As he
was the past-director of the Canadian War Museum this caused a pile of
confusion. After the film, presumably when it was apparent that his name
was not in the credits, he started a hate mail campaign via email that I
turned over to the police. He sent me what looked to be a sincere apology
but starts up again whenever my name is in the media. I used to consider
him a friend and colleague.
Oh humans are strange creatures. People who have been in this longer than I
have offered the consolation that such doings are not at all unusual. Back
to my own case, when I finally got back from M&C's principal photography, I
showed up at our sailing club's Christmas dinner with my wife. Nobody had
seen me since April. A fellow member who I knew only casually, perhaps a
little tipsy, came up to me and said aggressively "so I hear you think you
are quite the naval historian. Well I've got a buddy who really knows what
he's talking about. He's a real pro..." and so on. Then he said "my friend
is way ahead of you, you're just playing at it, he is just back from working
on the new Russell Crowe movie..." I stopped him and said " (name deleted)
just a minute - I think I am the friend you are talking about". He looked
shocked and abruptly turned away. He has never spoken to me since.
I guess the lesson is there is a cost to doing things that draw attention
that I certainly would never have been able to predict. That is why I was
more formal than I think you folks expected about putting my talk up on the
web. The stories etc I told were all true - but I was talking to a room
full of friends and not so formally as I might have if I were talking to the
world.
