[Public-List] Wire reel winch -handy billy

I've been waiting for somebody to ask!

If you don't want to use a winch, what you do is make yourself a small 3:1
or 4:1 tackle - the boom vang will do.  You haul up the main until it is up
as far as hand tension will take it; then you take your tackle, which has
hooks on the bales of the blocks and put one hook on a ring on the mast
(bale for the vang will do) and put the other hook on a ring that you have
cleverly worked into the halyard about three feet or so up the mast.

You pull on the tackle, that tensions the halyard.  Once the halyard is
cleated off, you remove the handy billy and either stow it or turn it into a
vang again.

Presto - no winch required; and how salty you will feel!
