Absolutely for construction of the stays, I would use the old ones to get the same exact length, but for ordering the wire, rough estimates are good enough, leaving some for wastage.  As long as enough material is being ordered for all the stays, and one starts making the longest stay, then the worst that would be lost would be the cost of 1 stay's wire - in 1/4" SS, at $1.80 a foot (CDN), and given that it will have to be too short to be useable, that will only come out to $60 at the most - not nice to lose, but not the end of the world either.  With 10' extra, that is only $18 - probably a reasonable amount.

Alternatively, just buy 43' extra so you you have enough spare for any single stay.

Don't forget to change the bolts from the 3 originally used to the recommended 6, or to increase the size in the chainplates - see the alberg30 site.

Hello friends -

When I have been involved professionally in the replacement of standing rigging, I always encourage the client to send me their old shrouds.  Even in one-designs there can be surprises with regard to lengths.  The only way to be sure is to make the new stays and shrouds with the old ones as patterns.
