[Public-List] Info on keel

Hi Edward,

I went through the same dilemma a few years back, but with a shallower
gouge. I believe the layup at the bottom is well over an inch.

I put some underwater epoxy putty stick on and waited until liftout. I spent
the time figuring out how I would place the boat in the cradle to get at it.
If it is a long gouge you may have to lift the boat twice to finish the
repair.

I used Marine Tex epoxy putty after letting it dry out over the winter and
thoroughly acetoning the area several times to draw out any moisture. Marine
Tex fairs out well and can be sanded, it can even be used to fix cracked
fuel tanks and exhaust manifolds.

It doesn't sag when applied to an overhead surface and when cured is
extremely strong.

You can use cloth with it if you feel the need to restore strength, but I
doubt you need to.

Most likely when you get it hauled you will find the gouge not nearly so
deep as it appears when hanging upside down in the water holding your
breath.

By the way, those under water epoxy sticks don't hold worth beans, knocked
it out in one piece with a tap on a chisel.

Go make some money sailing her to pay for the potential double lift and wait
until haul out.

Of course this advice is based on what sounds like a fairly superficial
gouge without my inspection.

But that is my suggestion

Best

John

Hey, everybody. Thanks for your prompt replies re: the Emotional Rescue
keel. Many of you recommended methods to repair the fiberglass; none of you,
however, told me the answer to my question.

Is the keel a certain thickness of fiberglass filled with misc. pieces of
metal and filled with cement grout OR is it a solid metal keel covered with
a certain thickness of fiberglass? When I was given management of the boat 8
years ago, the exposed V-berth sole was lightweight concrete encasing pieces
of scrap iron. I have no idea how far down that material goes.

The bilge is not taking on water. Would you be concerned that the fiberglass
is becoming saturated with fresh lake water such that we can not/should not
wait until Oct. 15th for a haulout and repair?

With approx. 1/2 inch deep gouges in the very bottom of the keel, do you
think that the encased metal is dangerously starting to rust and therefore
expand?

I am the volunter boat manager and my thought is to wait until Oct. 15th,
but I am being pressured by the club president to have the boat pulled now
and repaired. If I do that, we loose revenue from teaching lessons, taking
out under privilged urban kids, church groups, etc.

It depends on the glass mat. It used to be that it was held together with
starch, which dissolved in the polyester resin but not in the epoxy. Now you
can find glass mat which doesn't use starch and works just fine with epoxy.
