[Public-List] Stern Gland Housing Question

Michael,

On #221 there was a typical cutless bearing consisting of a metal
outer part with the rubber permanently attached to the inside of it to
make one unit. I had a 7/8" shaft, and I am 99% sure I installed a
Johnson "Apex" size when I put a new cutless bearing in. I could
double check that if you want me to, but not right now.

When you say you removed the "stern gland housing," do you mean you
removed the whole stern tube fitting? The fitting I refer to is an
somewhat old fashioned (used on wooden boats) fitting that looks like
a diamond shaped piece about the size of a deck of cards on the
outside of the boat, held in by two fasteners, top and bottom. This
has a stern tube attached and the metal-and-rubber cutless bearing
goes inside of it.

I have photos I'll send you offlist; since your boat is only ten newer
than mine was, there is a high likelihood they are the same.

BTW, while you have yours apart, one thing I corrected on mine was
that the inside (the boat) end of the stern tube and the stuffing box
were not the same OD. So no hose would fit on without the other being
too loose or too tight. The stuffing box was a hefty bronze casting,
with plenty of extra "beef," so I turned the outside down slightly on
a lathe so that both the stuffing box and stern tube would take the
same hose size.
