[Public-List] Propeller Shaft Material

Roger

According to the yard, the keel zinc is all I need. I have the bottom
cleaned every 60 days and get a report from the diver. As of last month the
zinc was still in good shape. I will most likely have the bottom paint done
again in July or August and will find out if the yard is correct.

Bill,

Do you know if the shaft brush eliminates the need for a Zink on the water
side of the shaft?

I replaced mine with stainless as well a couple of years ago. At the same
time the yard mounted a large zinc on the hull and grounded all of the
through hulls to that zinc. They also put a brush on the shaft that is also
grounded to that zinc.

So far so good.

My replacement was stainless. I did notice an increase in the speed the zinc
deteriorated, but this has not been an issue.

Hello -

I have aluminium bronze in 1 1/2" rod in stock; I use it to fabricate custom
large turnbuckle studs and lifeline stanchions. Alum Bronze is a
particularly hard alloy but that said, I think a 316 grade stainless shaft
will be superior in most aspects including avoidance of galvanic corrosion
and certainly wear. The Achilles heel of 316 is that it is relatively
brittle compared to galv steel or 304... but hardness and stiffness is what
you want in a prop shaft. Not malleability, which is what makes bronze
alloys attractive. If I were having a new shaft made I would use 316
stainless with no hesitation.

Cheers - Gord

It appears close to impossible to get brass or bronze 1" stock, so the
choice has been made for you. Do you have a line on bronze shaft material?
