Stephan

I have the same size and location as your tank. I have also removed it
for cleaning and checking. I thought I could remove it without taking the
A4 out, after emptying the gas I cut away the filler hose removed the
outlet connection had a heck of a time removing the the vent tube and
removed the exhaust stand ,and took out the electrical panel behind the
step. After removing the hold down strap I tried to move the tank, it was
stuck at the rear, after some jiggling (it had glass tabbing holding the
aft section down)it move but I could not get it out. So I thought this
would be a good time to check the rudder stuffing box and replace the
cockpit drain gate valves so I finally removed the engine this made it
much easier. While the engine was out I decieded to have it rebuilt, and
since there was good access I installed two more cockpit drains in the aft
corners of the cockpit and had them piped into the exsisting drains. To
help with the reconnection of the vent copper pipe I had to cut a square
hole it the starbord bulkhead, this also allowed me to add an addional
trap accross the aft section of the re-installed tank to secure it as the
hold down tabbing had been broken. I also replaced the mechanical fuel
guage with an electronic one to go with the VDO four gauge engine metering
panel, and allow me to keep the teak grating in place in the cockpit.

Good luck
