Okay, great.

I did something like what Matthew Hay is describing.  I made a long, L- 
shaped bracket and mounted the pump on the "foot" while mounting the  
"upper leg" to the vertical plywood separating the engine bilge from  
the "sub basement" that is under the saloon sole.  This way the  
mounting fasteners are up high and you can demount and lift the whole  
thing for service, plus you are not screwing into the bottom of the  
bilge.  On my boat this also put it at the deepest point of the sump.

My bracket had to have some custom jogs and bends (because I took out  
the false bilge in my boat and made it into a sump), so I made it out  
of a bit of aluminum stock - I think about 1/8" x 2" by about 4'

Another good way is to make it out of pre-made fiberglass board  
strips, like you can get from McMaster Carr.  They don't have the salt  
water/aluminum potential problem (although, not hard to replace it in  
X number of years if aluminum works better for your shaping).
