Here is how I took care of this problem (which does, indeed, exist -
my original stuffing box hose was "gathered" around the smaller stern
tube - not good).
My stuffing box was cast bronze, and the casting of the part that
takes the hose was quite robust, and a bit irregular on the outside
(just from casting). So there was plenty of "meat."
I turned the hose part of the stuffing box down to 1-3/8" diameter. I
chose this size because it is an available hose size, and is about
1/16" larger (or maybe even a bit less) than the stern tube outside
diameter. So this way the same hose (1-3/8") fit well around both the
stuffing box and the stern tube.
I have photos of it if anyone would like to see it (although it is not
that exciting - just a traditional stuffing box turned on a lathe).
There was plenty of heft left on the turned portion.
This worked well and it all went back together great.
Now, as I mentioned, I was not able to find "real" stuffing box hose
in that size (smallest: 1-1/2"). But unless you did drastic things to
the stern tube, you would never be up in that ballpark.
With a short, small diameter hose, I felt very comfortable with high-
quality wet-exhaust hose as a stuffing box hose.
