[Public-List] A Rope Question

Heh,  Gord;
     We just got back from visiting our daughter in Winnipeg.  One  of our touristy trips was to the Manitoba Museum [ great displays ]   .........  and then I found the replica of the NONSUCH that the Hudson's Bay Company had built and then sailed.  I was just there for a few minutes taking photos and chatting with the interpreter [ the girls insist that it was much more than an hour !! ]
I have a "rope" question that I hope you can clear up.   The interpreter said that rope was sometimes made "left handed" but admitted he had know idea why.   Can you shed any light ?   And if you don't object, I will send your response on to him.
