[Public-List] Rope Question

I think some of the old ropes were braided by twisting the strands from the 
middle,,,,,so it stands to reason some of the rope would be left hand and some 
would be right hand.  Sailors of old  (and some now) are a superstitious group 
and while the shroud thing makes no sense to me I would not doubt it.  The only 
time it seems to matter to me is when multiple lines are rove side by side 
 (think pad eyes).  I have a friend who is really into this and I will forward 
him the emails and see what Jimbo (member of the knot guild) thinks.

Hi Guys - 

Well one is that left hand laid cable was used for port side shrouds and
right hand lay for starboard....

Another is that left hand laid line was used in parts of rigs where the line
was more easily coiled left handed...

I have had both of these presented to me but I think the don't really
represent practical realities.


Anybody else have input?
