When you add up the costs of epoxy and varnish, star board isn't going to cost that much more, and it will take less time to assemble a new floor than putting on two coats of epoxy and several more of varnish.

I have a question that maybe someone could help with. Its not really "Alberg specific"......but this is a pretty knowledgable group.

I have an inflatable dinghy with a removable plywood bottom. Could anyone give me some suggestions on the best "paint" to use to protect the ply. It seems to spend almost all summer underwater...or at least as long as it takes after a rain for me to pump out the dink.

Thanx....Jim C

I'd sand the floor to bare wood, paint it with penetrating epoxy, then
varnish that. The epoxy will protect the plywood from water; and the
varnish will protect the epoxy from UV. The varnish will let you see what
condition the plywood is in so you'll know when and if you have to touch
anything up.

Gord's solution is a good one and it is what I would to too to keep the
plywood. As an alternative use the plywood as a template to cut out new
floor pieces from star board, then you never need to paint it again...of
course this is quite a bit more expensive and a bit more drastic...kind of
like a Roger fix.

Thanx guys...given the age of the dink I think I'll probably just epoxy the boards and get a couple more years out of them.

Much appreciated.

Oh man, I hate that stuff. Just my opinion, though.
