Heres my pump story...........I know this sounds pretty obvious ... and I should have been able to figure it out....but no one has ever accused me of being a rocket surgeon before,....and I've made a few classic mistakes, including this one.....
When I first bought my boat I was testing the manual bilge pump....it made all the appropriate bilge pump noises,.... but no matter how furiously I worked the handle, it wouldn't move the H2O from the bilge to the river. 
To make a very loong and frustrating story, short, I simply hadn't filled the bilge with enough water for the bilge intake hose to have anything to suck. Although the hose was located as close as it could be to the bottom of the bilge, it was still a 1" diameter hose and as soon as the water got lower than 1", it would just suck air ( and make bilge pump noises). The bilge still "looked' full of water to me down there in the dark.
The pump was working fine ....the problem was somewhere 'north of the pump handle".....
