[Public-List] Replace Icebox Insulation?

Hi Bob -

I improved SURPRISE's icebox by putting a reflective insulation layer
against the glass bulkhead seperating the icebox from the engine
compartment... I used the same stuff people glue to the inside of car hoods
for over the engine. Inside the box I used silicone to stick 2" blue foam
to the engine side of the box, then glued 1" of white foam all around the
top and sides. I didn't put anything on the bottom yet because I haven't
figured out how to get the L shaped tray out so that I can raise it an inch.
As things are now I can just get three blocks of ice under the tray. I
wouldn't be able to do that without lifting the tray.

We put another block on the back of the tray and a bag of cubes over the
canned drinks we keep on the outboard side of the box. We have found that
laying a towel over the icebox also helps keep it cool. I deal with air
leaks in the drain by standing a Robertson screw driver in it... It keeps
air from flowing out but lets water from melting ice by.

I've thought about mounting a solid state cooling unit from a car beer
cooler - my thought was that since the engine tends to heat the icebox I
would run the solid state unit whenever the engine was running... But they
take 7 amps and after talking with the engineers at Koolatron I decided that
the convulutions I'd have to go through to install the thing wouldn't be
worth it.

So I am doing my best to remember the Folkboat wooden boat days when we had
virtually no icebox at all and were quite happy... Compared to that the
A30's icebox is luxury.
