[Public-List] painting prop

Penaten is basically zinc oxide, suspended in an ointment (probably
mostly lanolin-based).

Years ago (many!) I conducted a series of toxicology tests on the use
of zinc and zinc oxide as an algaecide. The product we were testing
was intended to be a replacement for the high levels of chlorine and
bromine used to control algae growth in swimming pools. Zinc, in both
its elemental form and its oxide was surprisingly effective at killing
blue-green algae (cyanobacter), even at low concentrations. I would
not be at all surprised to find that in the form of Penaten it was
effective at controlling other bio-growth such as fouls propellers.

Maybe the fisherfolk are onto something. I can imagine West Marine
marketing a twenty-five dollar tin of baby bum ointment as the
latest, high tech anti-fouling agent for props.

PS my four babies' bottoms all benefited from Penaten to control
diaper rash - 'course, that was in the days before disposable diapers ;)

The fishermen in the boat yard I was in put penaten on their prop. Its
diaper cream and they claim that putting it on their propellers stops
stuff from sticking to it. I don't know. Another guy in the boatyard
put shoe polish on his. I put shoe polish on mine last year I will
find out how well it worked when I see the bottom in April Number 155
