[Public-List] battery boxes

Hello Roger,

I think there may be a commercial vessel regulation that batteries must be contained in a closed battery box, but don' t think it pertains to pleasure craft. My insurance agency requires batteries to be contained, and in any event seems like good seamanship to do so... some years ago a surveyor commented that a reason to keep batteries in a closed battery box is to contain the acid from going all over if the battery blows up. thought this was unlikely, until one of my batteries blew up. I 've been a believer ever since!

No need to vent the battery box. the vent holes on the battery case are meant to allow hydrogen to escape. should they get plugged, the battery explodes- apparently most commonly when the operator first tries to start the engine.
