2. Question about instability caused by tank location.

I don't have fuel tanks in the cockpit lockers, but this is the spot I chose to store my lead acid batteries when I converted Monsarrat to all electric, three years ago. I have 4 Trojan T105 batteries mounted in both port and starboard lockers, roughly at the waterline. The additional weight is approx 250 lbs port and starboard. Since they were installed, I have not noticed the boat being any more tender than she naturally is. I did notice that she is trimmed slightly by the stern. I therefore keep the water tank full, and make a practice of stowing heavier gear in the cable locker, rather than lazarette. This seems to work out OK. I don't have any real trim problems.

best regards, Brad

Roger,

After all the work that you have done to your boat over the time that I have belonged to the list I am glad to read that you are enjoying yourself!

Cheers,

Hugh

Hello all,

I have an inquiry about what other Alberg owners think about mounting tanks out board against the hull inside the cockpit lockers. I am planning to mount two 18 gallon tanks one in each of the cockpit lockers. I am interested to hear from owners who have saddle tanks mounted in the cockpit lockers. Has anyone noticed any boat instability or excessive rocking because of the extra weight of full tanks mounted so far outboard of the center-line? What gallon size tanks do you have mounted in the cockpit lockers? Originally I was hoping to mount the tanks closer to the center-line, but they would take up valuable storage space in the lockers. Does anyone have advice against mounting the tanks out board against the hull? I believe several of you have tanks mounted in this location and wanted to know if you have observed any problems. Thanks for your input.

Hi there

We gave Surprise an 18 gal tank outboard in the port locker; I'd call the installation a success.  When the tank is full she does have a slight list to port but we don't use that tank unless we're cruising.   We value the extra range under power above trim.    For racing, we keep that tank nearly empty and use the original midships tank under the cockpit sole.

Just back from the 2011 Misery Trip; no misery again this time.  Wonderful weekend

No problems with mine mounted on the STBD side, although I rarely fill
the 18 gal. tank all the way full.
1. it is a difficult install getting the fill hole to match the opening
on the deck. Not much room to work "down under".
2. after install, sawzalling out the original tank supports (glassed in
plywood) really increases the useable space for storage.

BTW, I figure I can motor the length of the whole Bay (Chesapeake) with
fuel to spare on 18 gallons and the 1/2 gal/hr rate on the diesel. Kind
of reassuring.  MG

Michael,

I helped to install about tanks in about 10 boats, mine included, about 25
years ago. I only have one tank, starboard side. It counter-balances the ice
box. I have never noticed any difference in stability or excessive
rocking...in fact you don't even know the tank is there!

And it is really nice to do the entire 10-day fall cruise, without having to
stop for fuel once.

I replaced the original under-cockpit tank with two custom built 17 gallon outboard tanks, one port & one starboard. The fill pipe on the starboard side?was spec'd to line up with the original fill hole in the deck. I've had no problems with trim. The tanks are mounted further forward than the original single tank. Normally I only use the starboard tank, but the port tank comes into play when I am on longer trips. My boat is docked on the Eastern Shore of the southern Chesapeake, where fueling facilities are scarce.
