John, long time no see. I was in Canterbury today. The thing to keep in mind is that boats here are usually regarded as feminine. My latest boat ,a Pearson Vanguard,I have renamed as Lady Grace, with the appropriate ceremony of course. The British Registry for small boats is the Small Ships Register (SSR).A Google search for Small Ships Register should give you all the information you need.

When I bought my Alberg 30 from Charlie Haggart in Toronto the boat was named TRILLIUM III...a name that I found a bit ponderous and that had no emotional connection for me. I didn't want to change the name -- superstitions again -- but, I found my solution to the naming dilemma when I received the British Registry for the boat (a holdover from the Commonwealth days I assume). The registry listed the names and owners of the boat going back to 1966. This is where I found the original name of the boat -- JANTE II. I decided then to reemploy that name. In my mind that would certainly appease the sea gods. Most importantly, I like the idea that there is some old guy out there who wonders occasionally -- "whatever happened to JANTE II?" I think that he would be happy to know that she is in good hands and features the same name.
