[Public-List] boat names

     My first "real" boat was a 34 ft Tancook Island schooner by the 
name of /"Brigadoon./" . Beautiful boat. Beautiful name. (You know the 
legend - Brigadoon was a mysterious Scottish village that only appeared 
once every 100 years. The hero stumbles across it, falls in love with a 
Scottish lassie there, and their love poses major problems to the 
villagers.)

     Anyway, I loved the name. (I bought the boat from Arthur Fawcett, 
in Annapolis, in 1958)

     There is another romantic story about that boat, but it's too long 
to tell here.

     Unfortunately, /Brigadoon/ was built in Nova Scotia in 1928, of 
wood, expected to last a dozen years. It needed much upkeep and when my 
wife had twins, we sold it to a man in Connecticut who spent eight years 
re-planking her. We, including the twins, actually day-sailed with the 
owner, a Mr. Nicholson, in about 1974. He died and last I heard the boat 
was still on Long Island sound.

     When I bought my Alberg in 1991 she had a name I did not like, so I 
re-named her /Brigadoon II./

     Having heard/seen so many ridiculous names on boats, I have a rule: 
before naming a boat try calling the name on Ch 16. See how silly (or 
not) it sounds to be calling the Coast Guard for help from the "Six-Pak II."
