[Public-List] Stuffing box

Hi folks,

Now that good old #148 is in the water, we seem to have a leak at the
forward end of the stuffing box and I would appreciate some advice as to how
to tighten it.

All the way aft is a hose clamped at its aft end to the bearing and at the
forward end to the stuffing box. I was told by a sailor/friend to, A)
restrain the aft end of the stuffing box fitting to keep from twisting the
hose, B) loosen middle part, C) tighten the forward part about 1/4 to 1/2
turn; then, D) tighten the middle part. Sounds reasonable to me, what y'all
think?

I am also having problems loosening the middle part. With such limited
space, it is hard to get enough leverage, even after several applications of
HD Blaster. I made a board to fit on top of the engine (now affectionately
known as the "prostate exam board") but I can barely get both arms in there.
I guess I will have to rig some kind of lever running above the engine. Any
suggestions would be appreciated.

Thanks,

Roger
