[Public-List] Mike Lehman - Fuel tanks

It was a long time ago that I did this, but I remember that the most
difficult part was the deck fill. The is only about 2" from the underside of
the deck to the top of the tank. The original deck fill needs to be closed
off and a new deck fill installed because the fill neck on the tank does not
line up with the old deck fill. The new hole has to be drilled in precisely
the right place and some of the tank fill neck has to be cut off as does
some of the pipe on the deck fill. The new deck fill fitting must allow the
hose to go all the way to the flange since the hose is only about 2" long
which will allow a single hose clamp on the deck fill pipe and a single hose
clamp on the tank fill pipe. Once installed, you will wonder if it even
needs addition bracing because the deck fill/tank neck hold it so tight in
position. But, you will need to install a cleat on the forward bulkhead and
a cleat on the aft lower edge of the tank, plus a vertical brace close to
the after part of the tank. I use wood for these cleats, the installed a 1 x
3 from the aft vertical support to the forward cleat to keep the aft
vertical piece in position. It made a great place for large SS line hanger
hooks and that is where we store all of our rafting/dock lines.

I put a Tempo tank into SURPRISE a few years ago... I forget which model it
is but it came in port and starboard configurations, so there's a clue.
Mine is a liner boat, which has a shelf in the molding in the cockpit
lockers. The tank fit up on the shelf like it was custom made and the way
it sort of disappeared into the otherwise hard to use space was great.
