[Public-List] Help with Head fitting

Hey Chris,

It is actually a no-no to have anything attached to the thru-hull fitting
before the valve, in this case your elbow. The proper setup is to connect
the valve directly to the thru-hull, then hose barb fittings to the valve.
If the elbow fails you can shut off the valve. In your case, it would be
difficult to insert a plug in the event of a failure. I think your option is
to relocate the thru-hull. Rachel had good suggestions on this. On the newer
liner boats the thru-hull is under the port settee in the main cabin but
that requires routing the hose through a hole in the bulkhead. It does
'clean up' the head area. Groco valves have combination threads on valve
which permits the valve to be attached directly to a thru-hull which has NPS
(straight) threads and the elbow which has NPT (tapered) threads. Use a good
sealant on the threads.

Subject: [Public-List] Help with Head fitting

Hello

I have one valve and fitting left to replace and of course it's the one
that's giving me trouble. I removed the head for replacement and want to
also renew the inlet valve and fitting. The old fitting is here:
http://muvvachicken.com/images/alberg30/head-fitting-sm.JPG

The fitting is at the aft section of the head compartment and is 1/2". The
thru-hull is connects to the valve via a 90 deg. elbow.

The new fitting is larger than the old and wont screw into the elbow, not
enough space below the head shelf. I'd rather remove the elbow but then the
fitting wont clear the head 'floor'/shelf either. Also, this option would
seem to create a bit of a mess for the hose once the head is installed.

I see a few options and am open to any ideas or advice.

1) Replace the the old thru-hull and cut the head shelf to clear the new
valve and hose.

2) Remove the existing fitting, fill the hole and move the thru-hull
forward. I havent measured but I think this will give more room but maybe
not enough room.

3) Remove fitting and relocate somewhere else. Where?

Is there a consensus location for the head intake on early A30's?

Thanks for any advice

Chris
