[Public-List] Buying tip of the week

In the Annapolis area WM has purchased the alternatives (BoatUS; EB Marine)
and the locals have closed up or changed ownership (Vikings - gone;
Fawcett's - new ownership, can now truly can be called tiffany's). That
leaves us with WM or your local marina which doesn't usually stock what you
need. My thought is that is more about the business model - WM expects to
get the same profit margins on marines hardware/supplies that it gets on
clothing/apparel. Using this business model makes them very expensive. I buy
a lot of stuff and have many, many examples where they are double or triple
what I pay elsewhere - I am glad they honor the price guarantee because I
intend to use that on every purchase.

One of the earlier posts on this thread voiced outrage that WM had much
higher prices. To the contrary, you should be glad they have the highest
price. That way the local Mom & Pop marine store can compete with better
prices and much better service / advice. When you should get upset is when
the big chain store with their low payed staff uses their buying power to
get a lower cost and then undercuts the local business on the common, volume
items and then the Mom & Pop goes out of business and you lose the local guy
who carried the full range of product on the shelf and had the product
knowledge to answer your questions.

Just my 2 cents worth.

Cheers, Rod
