Jeff... The difference in power consumption between a loaded and free
spinning alternator is a **lot**

Sea Story: In the Navy, I took a course on forward area gunfire spotting.
At a field exercise in enemy held territory [Silver Strand in Coronado,
California, in sight of our target, the Hotel Del] one person would do the
spotting and radio the spots back to the destroyer, while another operated
the portable high-freq transmitter for him. "Operate" means turn a bicycle
crank to a small electric generator, powering the radio. The crank work
listening to the radio was easy, but as soon as the spotter pressed the
transmitter button, it was like cranking up the mainsail on a mega yacht. I
encouraged him to keep the transmission short and got my revenge when we
switched positions.
