My brother-in-law's Marshal 18 (Cat Boat) has done extremely well with
Eco-Clad bottom through last sailing season on Cape Cod. The boat was in the
water all season, minus hurricanes. We looked at it last November and no
sign of any growth. Paint felt smooth to the touch and that was just after
garden hose wash down. He is planning to put another coat on this spring. I
will give another report in the fall.

Hi,

Has anybody tried any of the various ECONEA copper-free, water-based bottom
paints? They seem to good to be true.
No nasty solvents, less environmental impact, short drying time so you can
put on two coats in a day.
They're expensive, but no more so than other multi-season.
paints.

But do they actually work?

Practical Sailor has an on-going test of bottom paints. They published an
update in the March 2013 issue. The only water-based paint that made the
'recommended' list was Pettit's Hydrocoat SR. It is a water-based
multi-season ablative paint but still contains 40% copper and it contains a
bio-booster called NCN (cyclopopyl, dimethylethyl; methylthio, triazine,
diamine). After 15 months in warm Florida waters its rating was 'good'. No
other paints at 15 months received a higher rating than 'good'. At 26 months
(30 paints tested) no ablative paint received a higher rating than 'fair.
Only 2 (out of 25) hard paints received a 'good' at 26 months (Copper PRO
SXC 67 Hard by Blue Water and Trinidad by Pettit) neither is water-based.

Hope this helps
