[Public-List] Alberg 30 engine requirements

The Beta would be a newer engine and a replacement for the original engine
that came with the boat. The Volvo could be the original engine if it is a
later model Alberg and the the engine is a MD7A. The Volvo would be an
older engine. The Volvo is a very reliable engine, but parts may be
difficult and some parts may be discontinued. I recently had to buy an
exhaust flange for a MD7A and found they were no longer made. Luckily I was
able to find a new one that the local Volvo dealer still had in stock. The
brand new 'in the package' part was $140 but since this was old stock and
the dealer wanted to get rid of is they only charged $91 for the flange.
Compare that to an exhaust flange for an Atomic 4 which was only $12 the
last time I bought one. The Volvo MD7A also is a heavy engine at 485 lbs.
compared to the newer, lightweight diesels at 220 lbs. for a Yanmar 2GM20 or
my engine which is an Universal M430 (4 cylinder 30HP) @ 260 lbs. Having
said all that, if you are looking at boats that have been re-powered, it is
wise to inspect the installation very carefully...some are good and some are
not so good depending on who did the replacement.

Ahoy all! I'm looking at a couple different A30"s, and , of course there are
differences in age, condition, gear, etc, but it's a relatively close match.
However, one is powered by a Volvo Penta 13 HP, the other with a Beta Marine
20 HP. I would be interested in hearing from the seasoned owners who could
weigh in on how much power an Alberg 30 requires, and how do these two
diesels stack up against each other. I expect to be doing some rigorous
sailing and would hate to be wanting in engine capability when needed. Let's
assume the relative age, condition, etc, is fairly comparable. Am looking
forward to your replies! Thank you
