Hey there,
I have the same problem with the mast step having broken ears. Poor washers
and thin aluminum are probably to blame. The previous owner gave me a new
cast aluminum mast step with the boat but it is not flat and has voids from
the casting process which are near the ears. The bottom plate is to thin to
machine flat so I have been looking at other options like cutting off the
stub which mates with the mast and weld or fasten it to a piece of aluminum
plate or make my own step where the mast sits inside a piece of aluminum
"u" channel with a thru bolt in the same location. Possibly thru bolt the U
channel to the cabin top as well because I think some of the threads are
stripped in the deck mounting plate.
Anyways, I am interested to hear about what you come up with, as well as
the mast head. I am planning on taking the mast down this spring to redo
the standing rigging.
