Michael et al

My experience is that profurl is very strong and that reefing more than
three cranks is not a problem. My sails have reefing marks that tell me
when the sails are smaller by 10 and 20%. Even after that much reefing
and more sail shape is still functional - maybe not pretty, but beauty
is not everything. As to adjusting the fore stay, sometimes there are
problems like mast inversion that can be helped by adjusting the the
fore stay. I can see a situation in tuning the rig in which one might
want to change the fore stay tension. In any case, I like options and
multiple ways to solve problems. Serious adjusting the backstay requires
a backstay adjuster and not every one has one. All that said, most of
the time, you are correct when you say that when the rig is set up
properly, one has less reason to adjust the fore stay tension. But when
I have to adjust the forestay tension, I do not want to struggle with
it like I did when the Harken really needed to be adjusted. Also I doubt
if adjusting the fore stay would be a deal breaker by itself, but being
able to to do it easily is worth it. I always try to think of worse case
problems - and my rigger always advises "cape horn" solutions. I bless
him for it though there is no chance I will be anywhere Cape Horn. My
two cents worth. or maybe just one cent.
