[Public-List] Rudder Shoe Replacement

Hi James,

Having replaced a cutlass bearing on our previous A-30, suggest taking the
bearing housing (which is near irreplaceable) to a machine shop to have the
old bearing removed and a new one pressed in - it cost me less than the
price of the bearing itself to have this done ($35 CDN at the time).

The bearing housing came back looking like new and the water ports properly
drilled out on the bearing and the set screw properly inserted.

Be sure to pad the Stern tube if using pipe wrenches to ensure the teeth
don't score the stern tube. I used duct tape on the teeth - worked fine.

Might want to replace the stuffing box rubber hose while you are at it.
Don't cheap out here, use proper stuffing box hose and do replace the
packing too. I used Davis Teflon grease on the new mechanical packing.

Don't use the carbon packing ( will create galvanic problems down the
way ) - just use traditional 1/4 inch flax mechanical packing.

Also check the prop shaft to ensure it is in good shape - if not off to the
machine shop with that too. ; )

Just some suggestions.

Best of luck

John
