Wow, conjurs up all kindsa possibilities... cheap ballast substitute? ... Get plastered on Friday Night?? Use it in Mexico to fight Monte's revenge, small quantities most likely, giving rise to a huge amount still on board?

Perhaps Its not plaster after all, maybe its really cocaine and you are either now immensely rich or in a lot of trouble with the Feds.

Might be a good idea to donate it to Mr. Dumpster.

Ok. So mineral oil straight to the hull is fine. I was just asking
because I got most of a bag of plaster with the boat, and still have
no bloody clue what the PO used it for, so when I read "plastered to the
bottom" I was wondering if that's what the plaster had been for (and
whether I should repeat the process with plaster again). I guess there's
a lingering plaster mount for something elsewhere on the boat, that I
still have yet to find (or the bag was just inherited multiple times).

Cheers,
Kris

West Marine carries replacement transducers with little round universal plastic brackets that you can affix to the inside of the hull with 5200 or other adhesive. As I remember one adds maybe 1/2 cup mineral oil into the bracket and then plugs the transducer into the bracket with the mineral oil bath. This will get you up and running with a permanent fix with about an hours prep time.

The newer DIY transducers are much easier to work with. When I replaced my old depth sounder witha chart plotter few years ago, I mounted one of these units in the existing FG shell to protect the transducer from the usual bilge assaults, but they can go anywhere convenient, so long as they are pointed basically straight down, perpendicular to water line.
