Clay, hull #273 is a pre-liner boat and tough as nails. A group of the A30
guys had an unfortunate duty to salvage #135 in VA. It taken us a couple of
hours and a number of saw-all blades to get the rudder shoe casting and the
bow stem fitting plate cut away from the boat. Both fiberglass cross
sections were on order of 2 inches, Mike Lehman still has the pieces. It is
very hard to kill those good old boats so restoration, if the boat can be
purchased at a reasonable price is always an option.

For our 50th Parade of Sail in Annapolis this coming August 9th we will be
exhibiting boats from across the production spectrum and at various state of
"disrepair" at the National Sailing Hall of Fame docks for anyone that is
interested in the Alberg30s. We also plan to have a slide show of "before
and after" on many boats in our fleet as those were being rejuvenated for
anyone to see the possibilities and great potential in restoration of a
classic Alberg30. Join us if interested.

We are also looking for non-members to participate with their Alberg30 in
the parade of sail or come and watch the "Old Timers Race" with us on
Sunday. Please contact me for more details.

Different subject...I'm not a member as yet, but I had been looking at '67
Exuberant (hull #273) at Certified Sales in Mendon, MA (Salvage Yard). The
boat has a recently refitted 3-cyl. Vetus diesel with approx. 48hrs on it
and had suffered damage I believe during Hurricane Sandy (damage to keel,
toe rail, coaming, push-pit, stanchions, life lines). The fiberglass repair
is relatively straightforward and I thought it would be worth repair for a
sale price of a couple of thousand (it was initially offered to me for
$4000, I had planned to offer less). However, I had the boat surveyed and
it turns out that there is also unassociated deterioration of several
bulkheads and evidence of some "persistent" leaking through some
chainplates. Depression at the mast step is evident that the so called
Alberg 30 fix has not been retrofitted and may also be contributing to the
poor condition of the bulkhead (although leaks were noted to be a separate
contributing factor). Anyway, bulkh
ead repair is beyond my level of expertise and commitment level. The rep
at the salvage yard has indicated that he is going to have the boat crushed.
If anyone is interested in this vessel for repair or perhaps would want
parts it may be a good opportunity. He is going to salvage the engine at
minimum and I believe it also has good sails, mast, and perhaps other useful
hardware.

I had heard the association had taken up other restoration projects, would
there be any interest in restoring this boat (picture attached)? Below is
an itemized list of issues from the survey:

Repairs to the damaged fiberglass would be relatively straight forward. In
the course of the survey
other issues were discovered and are itemized below:
* Deterioration of the main transverse bulkheads carrying the rigging loads
outboard at the hull
tabbing.
* Depression of the deck under the deck stepped mast step
* Evidence of persistent leaks through the chain plates
* Evidence of deterioration of the chain plate fasteners
* Evidence of leaks through the hull/deck joint - by oxidation of the
through bolt nuts
* Extensive damage to the port side toe rail w/ deterioration (rot)
throughout
* Heavy damage to the cockpit coaming port side
* Deterioration (rot) of the fwd bulkhead of the port cockpit locker
* Damage and deterioration of the stbd cockpit locker access hatch
* Heavy damage to the transom pushpit railing, stanchions and stanchion
bases
* Heavy damage to the port side lifeline stanchion and stanchion mount
midships
* The forward cabin door does not close indicating some distortion of the
hull
* Deterioration of the transverse partial bulkhead at the Vee berth fwd
* Disarray and deterioration of DC wiring and plumbing respectively
* Age related deterioration of the interior joiner work and varnish

Thanks,

Clay
