[Public-List] Spreader bases on newer hulls.

In replacing the rig on Cookin (Newer hull), Dave found that the spreader bases are held on with a bolt that goes through the mast, and below that to stabilize the tangs a collection of rivets. These rivets are being replaced. In all other respects the bases seem to be in good shape.

The yard manager, indicated that the mast walls were not thick enough to take a tap and a bolt, and he recommended going all the way through with a bolt.

Questions:

1. Does anyone have experience with this issue? What is the role of the rivets? I have an older hull, but bases are newer. I have no rivets. The tangs hang off the central bolt with a triangular plate. (this has issues too, but...)

2. I would not have hesitated to put a tapped bolt / machine screw in - anyone have any comments on through bolting versus tap and bolt?

3. Is there a downside to putting through bolts in? Probably not - as there were four holes there for the rivets. Clearly, one would have to remember not to crush the mast when tightening these bolts.
