Gord,

It’s an interesting question whether A30 prices are higher in Canada and whether that might be because they’re sailed in freshwater.

From my spreadsheet, I classified each boat location according to whether it was salt water or fresh water. This is an imperfect process. Furthermore, a boat may migrate from one to another over its lifetime. For what it’s worth, though, freshwater boats (n = 28) had an average listing price of $15,057, 17% higher than saltwater boats (n = 37) at $12,857, supporting your observations.

But is this because they’re freshwater, or because they’re mostly Canadian? Dividing freshwater boats into Canadian and American, we find that Canadian freshwater boats (n = 22) average $16,032 but American freshwater boats (n = 6) only $11,483, even less than saltwater boats overall. This should be taken with a grain of salt though because the sample of American freshwater boats is small. But it (weakly) suggests that it’s being Canadian rather than freshwater that raises the price.

What could make Canadian boats more expensive? Here are some possibilities:

1. There is a higher demand for A30’s in Canada, driving prices up. After all, it’s a Canadian-built boat.

2. Canadians keep their boats up better than Americans. Could this be true?

3. It has something to do with the exchange rate. However, at current exchange rates, Canadian boats should be about 25% less expensive than American boats, all other things being equal. That’s obviously not happening, so other things must not be equal. But what might those other things be?
