Agreed.  The possibility of something getting pulled in to the system seems
to increase as time goes by.
Wondering if a slotted intake, such as the Groco STH Series Scoop
http://www.defender.com/product.jsp?path=-1|51|2234255|2234259&id=2628334,
might be an appropriate choice.  It has slots to blocks most items,
and the slots allow significant water flow.  Marine growth might have a
harder time blocking sections of the intake
given that the slots are wider than the holes in the standard thruhull
cover.  Guessing that motion through the water
would tend to wash growth out of the slots.

8" eel in the toilet!   That has give ya the willies!  I sure I'd hear a
lot of commotion and shouts from below if that ever
happened aboard #262.
