Hi Kris -
We've done the trip to New York twice, once coming in from the sea back to
Lake Ontario, and once out bound (neither time in SURPRISE, alas)
The first time I was utterly amazed at how lovely the Hudson is. Right down
to New York it's beautiful.
Can't resist another story... When coming in from the sea, we were puttering
along in a Dufour 31 we were delivering to Toronto from Martinique. Once
past Albany and on the Mohawk, we started encountering locks. Later we were
in the Erie canal system and the locks were frequent, and the channel quite
narrow.
There was a fellow in a large sport fishing sort of power boat who was
impatient and disobeyed the speed restrictions. At one lock he got a polite
reminder, with the explanation that his wake was bad for the canal banks.
He was a good boy till out of sight of the lock keeper, then howled away
ahead towing a huge wake. Well they made him wait for us at the next lock,
retribution for speeding.
As soon as the two of locked through and he was out of sight of the lock
keeper, away he went again. Sure enough, they made him wait for us... As we
came up chugging along at 5.5 knots I could see the power boat fellow waving
his arms impatiently and speaking in a disrespectful manner to the canal
staff. I heard the keeper say "OK - you are frozen here for three hours".
The fellow started shouting, so the lock keeper calmly said "OK - three
days". The guy shut up. What he hadn't figured out was that the keepers
could phone each other and when the guy showed up too early, they knew what
he was doing when they couldn't see him....
Ho ho ho..
