[Public-List] Self Tailers

We put 40ST's on SURPRISE for primaries, and moved the old Barient non-self
tailing winches aft onto the spinnaker winch pads.

I don't doubt that adding self tailing winches to the boat was the single
most dramatic improvement she's received while we've owned her. I know ST's
are not inexpensive, but I'd say they're worth every penny.

So what was the second most dramatic improvement? The head. When we got
SURPRISE she had a port-a-potty thing that was both awkward to sit on and
unpleasant to live with. Under the lid was illustrated instructions on how
to make a 'sled' of folded toilet paper by which to aid the passage of solid
waste contributions...

A number of years ago we put a real toilet-style head into her. Oh what an
improvement. One can now sit in comfort and read a magazine like a
gentleman when doing one's duty. I think the day I began toning down my
complaining that I missed the wooden boat, SURPRISE's predecessor, was the
first day I used the new head.

Gord #426 Surprise

PS - the wooden boat had a bucket. Actually she carried two, a blue one and
a red one. One was the head, the other for galley wash ups. Visitors would
commonly forget which was which... And at this moment, I can't remember
myself.
