I agree completely with what Jason, David and others have said about the new forum. My only interest in the Facebook forum was because of the ability to add and view photos. My hat goes off to those who created and maintained the list server for all of these years, the combination has been a wealth of information. The current search function, although a little clumsy is useful, but the lack of ability to view and post photos is a major downfall. For a newbie like myself that isn't familiar with every starboard do-hicky or aft whatchamacallit on our boats, a picture is worth a thousand words. In a world where taking a picture is as simple as removing the phone from your pocket, posting and viewing pictures in a forum should be just as easy. I know that the current list server has the option of emailing someone (I'm still not sure who) the picture who will see to it that it is posted somewhere on the website. But by the time the picture is posted, the significance to many of the others following the discussion is lost. Likewise, perusing the website for photos relevant to a current discussion is time consuming and often not relevant. The common place action of "email me that picture off-list" is hardly an effective way to have a central location of all things Alberg 30.
I agree that the best course of action seems to be to incorporate the wealth of knowledge from the list server and website into a all inclusive forum such as the newly created one. In my opinion the Facebook page would become obsolete if the new forum becomes the norm for Alberg 30 discussions.
I would be willing to help moderate in whatever way I am able.
For what it's worth,
Chip D.

Having been a member of the Cape Dory Board and the Plastic Classic Forum for about 10 years, this new format is far preferable to the A30 list format. All the talk about keeping things in one place is answered by this sample - no more viewing pictures in an unorganized "gallery" of images on the A30 site, no more going "over here" for the writeup, etc.
My only concern would be support: is someone committed to keeping the php up and running? Is the server reliable? Is there adequate support against spamming and malicious attacks? I know that the CD board has been successful because of a dedicated team of admins who keep the behind-the-scenes business nice and tidy. If that isn't available, then it would be a shame to start something new, collect a bunch of data, and then have all of it lost.
David
