Tim,
It sounds as though you and I have very similar skill sets/limitations. I
too don't know a lot about proper navigation but have considerable land
nav. skills from military service. I have found they translate pretty
well. As most of my cruising is day trips and shorter weekends I haven't
had much call for course plotting, but I have never felt as though I didn't
have a pretty accurate grasp on my location. I too am keen to learn more.
I have a sextant that I have inherited from a late friend and a few books
on how to use it. Sadly, the only knowledge I have gained from any of them
is how well they put me to sleep.
As this year's cruising commodore I've been looking for ideas to get fresh
blood involved and provide some new cruising experiences in addition to the
annual standard fare.
Would you have any interest in possibly hosting and organizing a Nav.Ed.
cruise. I'm sure there must be some skilled navigators among our group
that might be interested in sharing their knowledge and practical
experience over the course of a weekend this season. I would certainly
attend.
Let me know what you think.
