[Public-List] Replacing a mast step

Just an addition that many many not know or thought about, but the original
wiring for lights on the mast used the mast as the electrical conductor to
return the current to the panel. There was a short white wire affixed with a
machine screw to the base of the mast to reconnect the mast to a wire that
was the return to the panel for the DC current. If that system still exists
on a boat, one does not want to mix metals to increase galvanic action
between them. In any event, that wiring system ought to be replaced with
wire rather than the mast as the conduit.

Subject: [Public-List] Replacing a mast step

I am replacing my mast step (the casting had cracked by one of the bolt
slots). I am having the new one made from plate metal, with a piece or
pieces welded on top that are curved to fit into the bottom of the mast.

The metal shop was thinking stainless steel for strength and corrosion
resistance. Would that be best, or should I stick with aluminum to prevent
corrosion issues between it and the aluminum mast and aluminum plate bedded
in the deck?

Thanks,
Mike
