hello all,
I'm watching this thread with interest! My boat #322 has a cracked keel likely due to water entering the ballast area and freezing! I had fixed it last year but it cracked again this winter, opens up about 1/8 of an inch in the cold and closes to a hairline split when above freezing point. In my case water entered from the top of the keel from a crack in the covering of the ballast under the floor in the vee berth. Water flow from the anchor well and in my case a cracked water tank would enter the ballast area of the keel rather than flow to the back of the boat into the bilge. All that is now repaired but i think the cementious material around the ballast is waterlogged and will expand and close in freeze thaw cycle. Not good news over the long run but I will keep the boat on the hard in 2 years for a good bottom job. In the meantime my temp fix last year and going forward will be to grind and cover with a generous coating of thickened epoxy, no fiberglass which may hide that freeze thaw cycle. The ballast itself is cast iron which resists rust better and is in a low oxygen environment so I'm convincing myself it should be okay! I purchased the boat last year so not sure how long that condition existed but i got very good deal and the rest of the ship is original and in nice shape for its age!
