When I drilled my side decks for my self tailers, the cored deck was about 3/4" thick, maybe little less it seemed...

To cover the seam where it meets the deck/hull connection a PO ( I assume) fastened a half-oval ( not solid) stainless steel trim strip. To cover the base of the toe rail, however, the trim strip is slightly higher than the deck, perhaps 1/4”. That tends to dam up a bit of water, not much, but it doesn’t seem ideal. I removed the trim to inspect, and sure enough, behind the metal was quite a lot of fine composted dust. I removed all the trim and collected maybe a half cup of stuff. The trim strip had been screwed into the “edge-grain” of the masonite. It doesn’t look like it had been predrilled to allow for the shank of the screw as there was a split at nearly every screw-hole, and in a couple instances a slight hump is visible because of that. Amazingly there was no damage to the masonite core. It is dry and sound and when tapped sounds crisp throughout.
